Chapter Fifteen
Taylor
Atticusâs chest is the best pillow in the world. Maybe a little firmer than what Iâm used to, but his skin is like brushed satin over smooth steel and the beat of his heart in my ear is more soothing than a Gregorian chant.
Iâm half dozing, enjoying the feel of his warm skin against mine, when a distant series of pings tugs me from the threshold of sleep.
I jerk up to a seat. My phone. Finley. Shit.
The sunâs rays slanting through the window are angled lower than they were just a minute ago. Maybe it was a couple of hours ago.
I shift away from Atticusâs warmth. His hand tightens around me, luring me back, his eyes still closed. I give in for a few blissful seconds and then my phone pings again.
âI think thatâs Finley,â I say, my voice low.
His drowsy, soft eyes meet mine and then sharpen. âFinley?â
Realization dawns, washing over his face and leaving a flush in its wake.
âWe never called to check in.â He scrubs a hand over his face. âI think I left my cell in the truck.â
I scramble out of bed, plucking my shorts off the ground and finding my phone in the pocket.
Five missed calls and eight texts.
The phone rings in my hand and I swipe my finger across the screen to answer.
âFinley, hey.â I sit on the edge of the bed, facing Atticus, still sprawled in the center.
She blows out a noisy breath. âTaylor, holy hell, I thought you were lying in a ditch somewhere, or stung by killer bees, or choked on red gummy bears and dead.â
âRed gummy bears? Thatâs oddly specific.â
âIâve been having really weird dreams and red gummies are delicious. Now where are you?â
I bite my lip and meet Atticusâs eyes, before my gaze trails over the rest of him.
He rolls to his side, propping his head on a hand, the sheet draped over his hips leaving very little to the imagination.
That chest. Those arms. His mouth, dark pink and puffy from kissing me.
Heat rushes through my body, head to toe, despite the fact that weâve spent the past I-donât-even-know-how-many hours bringing each other to orgasm over and over. I lost count after four, but one look, one glance at his naked body and Iâm ready all over again.
Itâs never been like this with anyone else.
Of course no one else has been able to translate my body like a book written in a language only he can read.
I shove the horny thoughts to the side and focus on the conversation at hand. Finley. I canât be having sexy thoughts while Iâm talking to my sister and I have to explain our whereabouts for the past six hours without telling her that Iâm naked with her employee.
âWeâre at Atticusâs house.â When prevaricating, itâs always best to stick as close to the truth as possible.
Also find ways to delay for time to think of something.
âWhat are you doing there?â
I grimace at Atticus.
He shrugs.
Unhelpful.
âOur hike took a little longer than we anticipated. We had a little incident with a raccoon up on the trail.
